Red maca is available in several processing styles and product formats. The easiest way to choose is to work through the options step by step.
The first decision is how the maca roots are dried and whether the maca is later gelatinized (pre-cooked).
Our Raw Red Maca is made from maca roots that are traditionally dried in the Andean sun after harvest. Choose raw red maca if you prefer the traditional preparation.
Because raw maca retains more of its natural starch, some people find it harder to digest. If you know you are sensitive to starch or have found raw maca difficult to digest in the past, a gelatinized product may be a better choice.
Our Premium Raw Red Maca is made from freshly harvested roots that are dried using low-temperature dehydrators rather than traditional sun drying. This produces a stronger flavor than our traditionally sun-dried raw red maca.
Like other raw maca, it retains more of its natural starch. If you are sensitive to starch or prefer a pre-cooked maca, consider one of our gelatinized options instead.
Our Gelatinized Red Maca is pre-cooked before milling. This changes the starch structure of the root and produces a different texture and preparation from raw maca. Many people also find gelatinized maca easier to digest.
Our Premium Gelatinized Red Maca combines our premium drying process with the pre-cooking step used to make gelatinized maca. It generally has a stronger flavor than our standard gelatinized red maca.

Once you have chosen a processing style, decide how you prefer to take maca.
There is no single format that is best for everyone. The right choice is usually the one that fits most easily into your daily routine.
Once you know the processing style and format you prefer, compare the available products and sizes above. Choose the option that best fits how often you plan to use maca and how you want to incorporate it into your routine.

Red maca is one of the three primary maca colors, along with yellow and black. All three come from the same maca species, but the roots differ naturally in the color of their outer skin.
If you are deciding between the different colors, see our guide to Black vs. Red vs. Yellow Maca.
Raw red maca is dried and milled without the pre-cooking step used for gelatinized maca. Gelatinized red maca is cooked before milling, which changes the starch structure and preparation of the root.
Many people find red maca to be milder and slightly sweeter tasting than yellow or black maca. This can make red maca powder especially easy to use in smoothies, oatmeal and other foods.
At The Maca Team, Premium Maca refers to maca made from roots that are dried shortly after harvest using low-temperature dehydrators rather than the traditional sun-drying process.
Choose powder if you like adding maca to foods and drinks and want flexibility in how you use it. Choose capsules if convenience and avoiding the taste of maca are more important to you.
