Which maca is best for you? Compare red, black, yellow and tri-color maca, raw vs. gelatinized maca, powders, capsules and extracts to find the type and format that best fits your needs.
Quick Answer: Which Maca Is Best?
For most people, this is a useful starting point:
Colors
- Red maca — generally our first choice for women and commonly selected for reproductive health, vitality, midlife support, bones, mood and skin.
- Black maca — generally our first choice for men and commonly selected for reproductive health, vitality, stamina, strength and mental focus.
- Yellow maca — a traditional everyday maca and one of the simplest, most economical choices for general wellness.
- Tri-color maca — a balanced combination of red, black and yellow maca for people who want the characteristics of all three colors in one product.
Types
- Raw maca — generally best suited to people with normal to strong digestion.
- Gelatinized maca — generally a better starting point for people with sensitive digestion.
There isn’t one maca that is automatically “best” for everyone. The right choice depends on your priorities, digestion and preferred way of taking it.
And if you don’t want to sort through all the options yourself, our Maca Finder can help.

How to Choose the Right Maca in 3 Simple Steps
1. Decide what matters most to you. Think about why you are interested in maca in the first place — common reasons include reproductive health, daily vitality, energy, mood, midlife support, stamina, strength, mental focus, skin, digestion and general wellness, and many people choose maca based on a combination of priorities rather than just one.
2. Choose your maca color. Red maca tends to be the first choice for women and for areas such as vitality, mood, midlife support, bones and skin; black maca tends to be the first choice for men and for vitality, stamina, strength and mental focus; yellow maca is the traditional everyday option; and tri-color maca combines red, black and yellow roots for people who want a broader, balanced maca.
3. Match the preparation to your digestion. If you have normal or strong digestion, raw maca may be a good place to start, while gelatinized maca or an extract is often the easier choice for people with a sensitive stomach or digestive system.
Once you’ve made those three decisions, choosing among the different maca products becomes much simpler.
Which Maca Is Best: Red, Black, Yellow or Tri-Color?
Maca roots naturally occur in several colors. The three main color groups are yellow, red and black, and our tri-color products combine all three.
All maca colors are nutritionally similar, but traditional use, our experience working with maca for more than two decades, and published research suggest that the different colors are not necessarily identical in how people choose to use them.
Red Maca
Red maca is generally the maca we recommend most often for women.
It is commonly selected for:
- women’s health
- reproductive health
- vitality and drive
- midlife support
- bone health support
- mood support
- skin
Red maca is also sometimes chosen by men for particular needs, so it should not be thought of as “women-only” maca.

Black Maca
Black maca is generally the maca we recommend most often for men and for active lifestyles.
It is commonly selected for:
- men’s reproductive health
- vitality and drive
- stamina
- strength
- active lifestyles
- mental focus
Again, black maca is not exclusively for men. Women can use black maca as well.
Yellow Maca
Yellow maca is the most traditional all-purpose maca.
It is a good option when you:
- want a straightforward everyday maca
- aren’t trying to emphasize one particular maca color
- want an economical option
- are primarily interested in general wellness and daily use
Yellow maca remains a simple choice for people who want an everyday maca without emphasizing one particular color.
Tri-Color Maca
Tri-color maca combines yellow, red and black roots.
It can be an especially good choice for:
- everyday use
- couples or households sharing maca
- people who want a broad maca rather than choosing a single color
- people who simply prefer the traditional mixed-color approach
For people who do not want to emphasize one particular maca color, tri-color maca offers all three together.

Raw vs. Gelatinized Maca: Which Is Better?
This is the second major decision after choosing your maca color.
Neither form is universally better. The important question is which preparation is a better fit for your digestion and routine.
Raw Maca
Raw maca is dried and processed at low temperatures, retains the full starch content of the maca root, and is generally our first choice for people with normal to strong digestion who want maca in a minimally processed powdered form.
Gelatinized Maca
Gelatinized maca is gently cooked and processed to remove much of its starch, contains no gelatin despite its name, and is generally easier for people with sensitive digestion while also being somewhat more concentrated because some of the starch has been removed.
If digestion is an important factor for you, see our full Raw vs. Gelatinized Maca comparison and our guide to avoiding digestive discomfort when using maca.
What Is Premium Maca?
We offer both traditionally sundried maca and what we call Premium Maca.
Premium maca is made by placing freshly harvested maca roots into low-temperature dehydrators soon after harvest rather than drying them for an extended period in the traditional manner.
This creates some noticeable differences.
Premium maca generally has:
- a stronger taste
- a lighter color
- a finer texture
- higher measured levels of certain naturally occurring compounds such as glucosinolates
For people primarily interested in maximum glucosinolate content and who don’t mind a stronger flavor, Premium Maca can be an excellent choice.
For many other people, traditionally dried maca remains the better everyday option.
Neither is automatically “better” for everyone.
See our complete Premium vs. Sundried Maca comparison for a deeper explanation.
Should I Choose Maca Powder, Maca Capsules, Maca Extracts or Another Form?
Once you know the color and preparation you prefer, the next question is how you want to take maca.
| Format | Advantages | Things to Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Maca Powder | Most economical; flexible serving amounts; easy to use in smoothies, foods and recipes | You taste the maca and need to mix it into something |
| Maca Capsules | Taste-free, portable and convenient | Usually more expensive per serving than powder |
| Maca Extracts | Concentrated, portable and generally gentle on digestion | Less traditional and typically more expensive per serving |
| Maca Chips | Closest to the whole dried root; useful for teas and traditional preparations | Require steeping, simmering or preparation |
| Maca Blends | Convenient way to combine maca with other foods and ingredients | Less maca per serving than a pure maca product |

Quality Matters Too
Choosing the right maca color and format only matters if the underlying maca is high quality, which is why our maca is grown in the Peruvian Andes, certified organic, non-GMO, sourced through long-term relationships with Peruvian growers, and independently tested with testing information available for individual products.
When comparing maca products, we recommend considering:
- Peruvian origin
- growing region
- organic sourcing
- freshness
- maca color
- raw vs. gelatinized processing
- product form
- testing
- storage
- transparency from the company selling it
If your main question is which maca brand or supplement to buy, rather than which maca type fits you, see our companion Best Maca Brands & Buying Guide.
That guide covers sourcing, freshness, testing, brands, marketplaces and how to evaluate a maca supplement before buying.
Choosing Maca for Women
Red maca is generally our first recommendation for women, especially when reproductive health, vitality, midlife support, mood, bones or skin are among the main considerations.
Yellow or tri-color maca can be good broader everyday choices, while black maca may also make sense depending on individual priorities.
| What You’re Considering | Maca We Most Often Recommend |
|---|---|
| Female reproductive health | Red Maca |
| Vitality and drive | Red Maca |
| Midlife support | Red Maca |
| Bone health support | Red or Black Maca |
| Hair health | Red Maca |
| Skin clarity and balance | Red Maca |
| Broad everyday use | Tri-Color or Yellow Maca |
Then make a second decision based on digestion:
Normal digestion: consider raw maca.
Sensitive digestion: consider gelatinized maca.
For detailed recommendations by age, lifestyle, digestion, maca color and product form, see our complete Best Maca for Women guide.
Choosing Maca for Men
Black maca is generally our first recommendation for men, particularly when vitality, stamina, strength, active lifestyles or mental focus are priorities.
Tri-color maca can be a good broad everyday option, while red maca may make sense for particular considerations.
| What You’re Considering | Maca We Most Often Recommend |
|---|---|
| Male reproductive health | Black Maca |
| Vitality and drive | Black Maca |
| Performance support | Black Maca |
| Prostate-related research interest | Red Maca |
| Strength and active lifestyles | Black Maca |
| Stamina and endurance | Black Maca |
| Broad everyday use | Tri-Color Maca |
Again, digestion helps determine the preparation:
Normal digestion: consider raw maca.
Sensitive digestion: consider gelatinized maca.

How Do I Choose a High-Quality Maca Supplement?
Once you know the type of maca you want, you still have to choose the actual product and company.
Not every maca powder, capsule or supplement is necessarily equivalent.
Important differences can include:
- where the maca was grown
- how fresh it is
- how it was dried
- whether it is raw or gelatinized
- whether the maca color is clearly identified
- how it is stored
- whether it is independently tested
- how transparent the seller is about sourcing and quality

Frequently Asked Questions
Which maca is best overall?
There is no single maca that is best for everyone. Red maca is generally our first recommendation for women, black maca for men and active lifestyles, and yellow or tri-color maca for broad everyday use. Raw maca is generally better suited to normal digestion, while gelatinized maca is often easier for sensitive digestion.
Is red or black maca better?
Neither is universally better. Red maca is more commonly recommended for women, while black maca is more commonly recommended for men and active lifestyles. Your individual priorities matter more than simply choosing the “strongest” color.
Is yellow maca good?
Yes. Yellow maca is the traditional everyday maca and can be an excellent choice for general wellness, regular use and people who do not need to emphasize one particular maca color.
Is tri-color maca better than a single color?
Not necessarily. Tri-color maca combines red, black and yellow maca and is useful when you want a balanced product. A single color may make more sense if you have a specific reason for choosing red or black maca.
Is raw or gelatinized maca better?
Raw maca is usually our first choice for people with normal to strong digestion. Gelatinized maca is cooked and has much of its starch removed, which makes it easier for many people with sensitive digestion to tolerate.
How do I choose between maca powder, capsules and extracts?
Powder is generally the most economical and flexible choice. Capsules are convenient and taste-free. Extracts are portable, concentrated and often a good option for people who prefer a liquid format or have sensitive digestion.
What should a beginner look for when choosing maca?
Start with three questions: which maca color best fits what you’re looking for, whether raw or gelatinized maca better suits your digestion, and which format is easiest for you to use consistently. Yellow or tri-color maca can provide a broad starting point, while red or black maca may make more sense when you have a particular reason for choosing that color.
Does maca quality matter?
Yes. Maca products can differ in origin, freshness, processing, storage, color identification and testing. Look for authentic Peruvian maca, clear sourcing information, organic certification where relevant, transparent processing information and established quality standards.
